Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Turkey reflect

The UEFA Futsal EURO 2012 quarter-finals begin on Monday but four nations will not be taking part.
Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Turkey, all seeded third, fell after two losses, while the Czech Republic then departed on Saturday, also with a pair of defeats. The quartet had contrasting expectations – Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic reached the 2010 semi-finals, Slovenia had never won a major tournament game while Turkey were making their debut – but all must now look forward.
For Azerbaijan, the 4-1 defeat by Portugal was disappointing, and the pulsating 9-8 loss to Serbia heartbreaking for a side who captured the fans’ hearts with their thrilling futsal, just as two years ago in Hungary when they made an incredible breakthrough. “In 2010 we all played for the same club and that made a huge difference on the pitch because we knew each other very well and we connected perfectly,” Thiago told UEFA.com.
“We also miss the influence of [injured] Biro Jade and we could see just that tonight as I don’t think we would have conceded so many goals with him in the team. [Against Serbia] maybe we were not humble enough after scoring two early goals. We should have continued to play like we were doing until that moment: waiting for our opponents to make a mistake and scoring on the counterattack. It was a very sad farewell to the competition.”
The Czech Republic, who defeated Azerbaijan for bronze two years ago, are also on their way home following a 3-1 reverse to Romania and a 5-4 loss against hosts Croatia. For Tomas Neumann, his charges’ Achilles heel is obvious. “We can’t score – that’s our problem,” he said. “We had a lot of chances over the two matches but we scored only during powerplays [when deploying a flying goalkeeper]. In qualifying we played very well but now I don’t know why we can’t score.”
Slovenia raised many eyebrows with their battling performance in the 4-2 loss to Spain, but were overrun by Ukraine’s swift counterattacks in a 6-3 defeat made more respectable by two late goals. Thousands of fans made the short trip to Zagreb to cheer them on, and like Azerbaijan and the Czechs, Slovenia can look forward to next Saturday’s FIFA Futsal World Cup play-off draw, a two-legged tie away from Thailand.
Coach Andrej Dobovicnik said: “I hope we will feature more often in tournaments like this one in Croatia. This is a great incentive for the guys, who, of course, are not professionals. The problem with futsal in Slovenia is that we cannot do any extensive preparation, because the players have their own jobs every day.”
Turkey do not have World Cup play-offs to prepare for, but it was no disgrace for the only nation to make it all the way from the preliminary round to the finals to lose to former champions Italy and Russia. “From Turkey [venue for the preliminary round] to Croatia I can see we have reached the same level as a lot of European teams,” coach Omer Kaner said.
“We’ll do much better with time, of course, but in a few years when we get to this stage again we’ll do our best and you will hear more about Turkish futsal.”

Stankovic and Croatia hit quarter-final target

Mato Stankovic, Croatia coach
It feels very good [to have qualified] but, at the moment, we have only hit the targets we and our fans expected us to. Yes, [I was worried when they levelled at 3-3] but I’m very proud that we showed a good attitude. Finally, after several years, this team has turned into one which can win that type of game.
I’m very grateful that in these weather conditions a lot of people came to the arena, it was an incredible number. We’re very thankful for the support and I’m sure on Monday [against Ukraine in the quarter-finals] there will be more people here to support the Croatian futsal team. I’m very glad they’re happy to be part of it.
Ivo Jukic, Croatia goalkeeper
We were handicapped because of the snow – there would have been 10,000 fans here if the weather wasn’t so bad. I have to thank every one of the supporters who made it to the hall; they helped us in the end when we needed it. We’ve settled an old score with the Czech Republic and I hope we’ll do the same with Ukraine.
Tomas Neumann, Czech Republic coach
I would like to congratulate Croatia. The atmosphere was very, very good and the game was, too. We can’t score – that’s our problem. When it was 3-3 we had a chance, but we made mistakes and Croatia scored instead. We tried to play with the flying goalkeeper, and scored, but Croatia were very good defensively and we didn’t have any more chances.
Lukas Resetar, Czech Republic forward
The second goal early in the second period gave Croatia the psychological advantage, so we needed to use the flying goalkeeper for most of the half. When you play like that there is a lot of risk involved and Croatia punished us a couple of times when we lost the ball. We hoped to reach the quarter-finals, so we can’t be happy with two defeats.

Croatia sew up Group A with thrilling Czech win

Croatia advanced to the last eight of UEFA Futsal EURO 2012 as Group A winners courtesy of a 5-4 victory against the Czech Republic, who are out.
Leading through Jakov Grcic and Dario Marinovic by the 23rd minute, the hosts were pegged back by Michal Belej. Frane Despotovic restored the two-goal cushion and while Marek Kopecky and Roman Mares helped level matters, Tihomir Novak and Marinovic, again, sealed a win which means Croatia remain in Split to play Ukraine in the quarter-finals on Monday.
Needing a two-goal triumph to progress at the expense of the hosts, the 2010 semi-finalists tried to force the issue yet in doing so almost came unstuck, Libor Gercak thwarting Marinovic in an early one-on-one. Tomas Neumann’s side responded through Jan Janovsky, but the size of their task grew when Grcic’s shot was went in off Kopecky.
Exuding confidence, Grcic executed a bicycle kick into the side netting moments later. Content to bide their time before the goal, Mato Stankovic’s team intensified that approach while retaining their menace, Franko Jelovcic hitting the woodwork one such example.
Marinovic doubled the lead two minutes after the restart with a final individual goal from Grcic’s chip forward. Bringing the ball out of the air with aplomb, he put Gercak on his backside before calmly finding the net.
Now desperate, Neumann deployed JiL(Trade Mark)i Novotny as a flying goalkeeper; it immediately paid dividends as the No3 set up Lukas Resetar for a shot which Belej nudged in. No sooner had the plan worked, though, then the Czechs found themselves two behind again, Despotovic easing the tension with a punt into the unguarded net.
Kopecky and Mares gave the Czechs a ray of hope but a fierce Novak drive and Marinovic’s shot into another empty goal put the gloss on proceedings. Though Novak put through his own net, the Czechs’ chances disappeared altogether when David Fric was sent off.

Russia criticises EU’s foreign policy chief for ‘interfering’

Russia has accused the European Union foreign policy chief of interfering in its internal affairs by making statements about the Russian election.

A spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry, Alexander Lukashevich, said Thursday that Catherine Ashton’s comments on Russia made February 1 in the European Parliament are bewildering.

In her speech, Ashton urged the Russian government to engage in dialogue with the opposition and to review its decision to deny registration for the presidential election campaign to opposition leader Grigory Yavlinsky.

She said the OSCE noted irregularities in Russia’s December parliamentary election and that Russians want to see a real change.

Lukashevich said that Ashton’s call for a review of the election commission’s refusal to register Yavlinsky oversteps the bounds of political correctness as do her attempts to speak on behalf of Russian civil Society.

He also said Russia noticed the “unambiguous” attempts by the EU representative to question, in advance, the free and fair nature of the upcoming presidential election in Russia.

Prime minister Vladimir Putin is set to run for a third term as president in the March election. Reports of widespread fraud in Russia’s December parliamentary vote led to anti-government demonstrations across the country.

If Putin regains the presidency, he could serve two more six-year terms. He was first elected president in 2000 and held that post until 2008, when he assumed the post of prime minister. But in 2008, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev signed a law extending presidential terms from four years to six, in a move seen as paving the way for Mr. Putin’s return to the presidency.

Turkey seeks life sentence for ex-military chief

Turkish prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment for a former army chief in an alleged plot to topple the government of prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

General Ilker Basbug has been jailed since January 6, when he was arrested as a suspect in an alleged Internet campaign aimed at destabilising Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted government. Prosecutors also accuse the retired general of leading a terrorist group.

Basbug was military chief of staff from 2008 to 2010. He is the most senior officer to be charged in alleged plots against Erdogan’s government.

The case focuses on anti-government propaganda published on websites the military was accused of running that were linked to an alleged secularist network known as Ergenekon.

Turkish authorities have detained more than 300 people, including journalists, academics and politicians, as part of a wide-reaching investigation of Ergenekon. The case has highlighted international concerns about press freedom in Turkey.

Prosecutors say the group plotted in 2003 to bring down the government through bombings and other attacks to discredit the government and trigger a military coup against the ruling Justice and Development Party. Turkey’s military ousted four governments between 1960 and 1997.

Wrecked cruise ship salvage may take months

The owners of a shipwrecked cruise liner say it may take seven to 10 months to remove the overturned vessel from an Italian coastline.

U.S. based Carnival Corporation says it has contacted ten firms to submit plans for the job.

Carnival plans to make a decision by the end of next month on which company will remove the hull of the Costa Concordia, which lies in an environmentally sensitive area.

At least 17 people died when the more than 100 000 ton cruise ship struck rocks near Giglio Island last month and flipped on its side.

Rescuers are still trying to locate 15 other people still missing from the partially submerged ship.

The giant cruise ship was carrying 4229 passengers and crew when it rolled over.

The ship’s captain has been accused of steering the ship to close to the shore and onto the rocks.

He remains under house arrest on multiple charges, including manslaughter and abandoning ship before those were on board had gotten off safely.

World Cup exit focuses Croatia minds

Croatia coach Mato Stankovic has warned his side against complacency when they face the Czech Republic, their old nemesis, in a contest for the remaining qualification place from UEFA Futsal EURO 2012 Group A alongside Romania.
The odds are stacked in the hosts’ favour following their 2-1 defeat of Romania on opening night and the latter’s 3-1 victory against the Czechs on Thursday. That means the 2010 bronze-medallists must beat Croatia by two goals or more to progress at their expense for the third time in four Futsal EUROs and deflate the hopes of supporters who are again expected to pack the Spaladium Arena in Split.
Stankovic, however, knows from recent experience that winning the first fixture in a group does not guarantee success: in December his side started their FIFA Futsal World Cup main round campaign by overcoming Azerbaijan but were denied a play-off place by one goal in a three-way head-to-head tie-breaker despite prevailing 4-1 against the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in their last game.
Asked if it will be important to keep his players grounded following the euphoria of Tuesday, when a tournament-record crowd of 8,000 turned up, he said: “Of course, because during World Cup qualification we faced the same situation. We won our first match against Azerbaijan and we thought we’d progress, but then we lost to Ukraine and everything went wrong. That’s a sign we must be careful going into our next game.”
In the countries’ last encounter, Croatia missed out on the 2010 finals with a 3-2 Czech win in Ostrava that came through two last-gasp goals either side of an Ivo Jukic red card. The Czechs also won decisive qualifiers against Croatia in 2007 – in Split – and 2003, and goalkeeper Jukic said: “We’re looking forward to the Czech Republic. We have some ‘issues’ with them from matches in the last few years and we believe we can beat them.”
Disconsolate in his post-match press conference on Thursday, Czech coach Tomas Neumann knows there is “a lot of work ahead” if he and his charges are not to make an early exit. “We have two days to prepare and we’ll try to win by that [two-goal] margin,” he said. Far from fearing that his players might be overawed by the weight of support in the arena, Neumann wants them to use it as a source of inspiration. “I like the big atmosphere – I hope the players do and it makes them play better.”

Comment on Roomkey: Key to the online future? Not likely.

You know something is up when six of the world’s biggest hotel groups join forces to create their own booking website to directly compete with online travel agents.

Choice Hotels International, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott International and Wyndham Hotel Group all own a piece of the new site – Roomkey.com.

It’s caused something of a stir in the tight-knit world of travel distribution though not the controversy it might generate in some other industries where suppliers would never set up shop to compete directly with retailers.

But the travel industry has seen it all before.

A recent example includes the oddly named Opodo, a European Online Travel Agent now owned by private equity, which was originally formed in 2000 as a joint venture between Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, KLM and Lufthansa.

Their motivation, same as the Roomkey.com founders, was to cut travel agency distribution costs, which can be as high as 30 per cent.

The partner airlines figured they could sell their airfares at a reduced commission through their very own online co-operative, just like Roomkey.com

But it wasn’t that simple.
